PPF, or Paint Protection Film, is a transparent or coloured polyurethane film applied to a car’s paintwork to protect it from stone chips, minor scratches and UV radiation. Unlike vinyl wrap film, PPF doesn’t change the car’s colour (in transparent variants) and is significantly thicker and more flexible — its main job is protection, not styling.
Structure of PPF film
A typical Bright PPF film consists of several layers:
- Top liner (PET) — a temporary protective layer removed before application.
- Top Coat — a hardening coating responsible for self-healing and the hydrophobic effect.
- TPU (polyurethane) — the main, flexible protective layer resistant to yellowing.
- Adhesive layer (PSA) — a transparent pressure-activated adhesive, safe for the paint.
- Bottom liner — a carrier film removed immediately before application.
How does self-healing work?
The self-healing effect takes place in the Top Coat layer. Under heat — e.g. sunlight, warm water or gentle heat from a heat gun — the polymer structure in this layer temporarily loosens, allowing it to “smooth out” minor scratches and swirl marks caused by, for example, a car wash brush or sand. Deeper mechanical damage won’t be removed this way, but everyday micro-scratches will.
Why it’s worth using PPF
Beyond mechanical protection, modern PPF films — including Bright films — have an additional hydrophobic coating that helps water run off and reduces dirt adhesion to the surface. This translates into easier, less frequent car washing and a longer-lasting, fresh look for the paintwork.
